About Congressional Redistricting
Congressional districts are redrawn every ten years following the U.S. Census to ensure each district has roughly equal population. In New York, the redistricting process is overseen by the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission, with final maps approved by the State Legislature.
Long Island's congressional map has shifted significantly over the decades as population patterns change. The current boundaries, based on the 2020 Census, divide Nassau and Suffolk counties into four primary congressional districts (NY-1 through NY-4), each representing approximately 776,000 residents.
Redistricting can have a major impact on which communities are grouped together and which incumbent officeholders face reelection challenges. Residents should verify their current district assignment at the New York State Board of Elections website.
