The New York State Assembly is the lower chamber of the State Legislature. Long Island is home to dozens of Assembly districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties, each representing approximately 135,000 constituents.
The Role of the State Assembly
The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the state legislature, consisting of 150 members. Assembly members serve two-year terms and represent districts of approximately 135,000 people. The Assembly is led by the Speaker, who controls committee assignments and the flow of legislation.
Assembly members introduce and vote on state legislation, participate in the state budget process, and serve on committees that oversee areas like education, health, transportation, and local government. They serve as the direct voice of their communities in Albany.
