Biography

Senator Siela A. Bynoe represents the 6th Senate District in central Nassau County, covering communities including Uniondale, Roosevelt, Freeport, Hempstead, Levittown, East Meadow, and parts of Baldwin and Rockville Centre. She made history in January 2025 as the first Black person to represent Long Island in the New York State Senate. A first-generation American born to parents who emigrated from the Caribbean, Bynoe grew up in Queens Village before moving to Long Island at age five. She graduated from Westbury High School, earned an Associate's degree from Nassau Community College, a B.A. in Psychology from Hofstra University, and a Master's in Public Administration from LIU Post. She built her career in affordable housing, working at the Long Island Housing Partnership, the North Hempstead Housing Authority, and as Executive Director of the Huntington Housing Authority, helping secure over $40 million to rehabilitate affordable communities. She served five terms in the Nassau County Legislature starting in 2014.
